Putting Your Custody Arrangement in Writing
A parenting plan spells out how parents will share time, responsibilities and decisions for their child. In California, judges and mediators rely on parenting plans to see whether a proposed arrangement offers stability and structure.
A good parenting plan covers:
• The regular weekly schedule
• Holidays, birthdays and school breaks
• Summer vacation
• Where and how exchanges happen
• How parents will communicate
• Who makes decisions about school, health care and activities
• Travel and relocation
The Judicial Council has standard attachments, such as the FL-341 series, that help organize these terms in a court order.
In my experience, vague plans cause the most conflict. "Reasonable visitation" can mean very different things to two parents who don't get along. Specific times, places and rules leave less room for argument.
A realistic, child-focused plan also strengthens your position in mediation and in court. It shows the judge you've thought carefully about your child's daily life, not just about winning.
