What Happens After You File a Request for Order

Posted by Jomo Stewart | Nov 01, 2026

The Timeline From Filing to Final Order

Filing your FL-300 Request for Order is just the beginning. Knowing what comes next helps you stay organized and avoid missed deadlines.

Here's the typical sequence:

1.      The court sets a hearing date. The clerk stamps your papers and assigns a date, often several weeks out.

2.      You serve the other parent. Generally at least 16 court days before the hearing, by someone over 18 who isn't a party. Then file the proof of service.

3.      The other parent responds. Usually on an FL-320, at least 9 court days before the hearing. You may file a reply.

4.      Mediation, if custody is at issue. Most counties schedule this before the hearing.

5.      The hearing. The judge reviews the filings and any mediator recommendation, hears briefly from both sides, and makes orders.

6.      The written order. One party prepares the Findings and Order After Hearing (FL-340) for the judge to sign.

That last step is often forgotten. An order isn't fully enforceable until it's written and signed, so make sure it's prepared and filed.
